Lacrosse In The Physical Education Classrooms

In May 2010 the Pine Street School Foundation awarded a grant to the Physical Education department in order to teach our elementary students the game of Lacrosse. The grant provided funding to purchase Lacrosse sticks and balls in the various sizes needed to teach students in every grade. The students learn the rules and objectives of the game. This curriculum complements the other activities and sports that are being taught in PE. Lacrosse is an extremely popular sport at Spartanburg High School and has just been introduced there in the last couple of years. This grant allows students to be exposed to the sport at a younger age which will hopefully foster a greater interest in the sport.

New Grant Awarded to Music Program

The Pine Street School Foundation awarded more than $20,000 in grants to teachers during the 2010 - 2011 school year. One of the grants that was awarded was "Orff Instruments for Intermediate Grades." In an effort to enhance Pine Street's arts infusion goals, our music program has been shifting to an Orff based approach. Composer Carl Orff's program encourages improvisation and creative movement where the students often compose and perform their own works written on a theme or an idea. The Foundation provided a grant of $4,000 for the music department to purchase additional glockenspiels, xylophones and metallophones. This program has become an integral part of the music classroom.
